Leadership DevelopmentTeam Leader Training
A practical 12-week pathway designed to develop Team Leader leadership and their ability to improve processes, results and people.
Why develop Team Leader leadership
Some people are promoted to Team Leader because they have technical experience and have demonstrated reliability. However, this does not mean they are already prepared to lead a team, organise work, maintain standards and deliver the required performance.
The role is more complex today than it was twenty years ago. A model based solely on command and control no longer works: Team Leaders need a participative, non-coercive style that respects people’s dignity. At the same time, they must understand and apply Kaizen principles, Lean methods and company standards.
When a position must be filled quickly, a new Team Leader may be appointed without complete preparation. This can lead to communication problems, low motivation, failure to follow standards, late reactions to deviations and insufficient industrial results.
Challenges to overcome
- limited time available for traditional training courses;
- difficulty finding trainers with genuine industrial experience;
- generic programmes that are not adapted to the sector, process or role responsibilities;
- the need to apply learning immediately without interrupting operations.
Skills to develop
A Team Leader must be able to set challenging objectives, motivate people, accelerate continuous improvement, use Lean methods, understand company standards and procedures, teach them to team members and develop performance through feedback and coaching.
Training and individual mentoring
The programme transfers the mentors’ practical experience to Team Leaders, accelerating the acquisition of management skills. The goal is to help them operate with the confidence and capability of experienced professionals, reducing the cost of mistakes and the time required to achieve expected performance.
Mentoring is a process in which a person with specific experience, skills and knowledge supports a less experienced person until they acquire comparable operational capabilities. It is based on a trusted personal relationship, discussion of real situations and the mentor’s sharing of workplace experience.
Il percorso è rivolto a Team Leader di primo livello, responsabili di turno, capi reparto, responsabili funzionali e responsabili di progetto nei settori meccanico, Food & Beverage, servizi e uffici. Per altri settori viene effettuata una valutazione specifica.
The indicative duration is two to three months, depending on the starting level, role complexity and performance to be developed.
The KCI three-dimension system
In the Kaizen Coach International model, managerial performance emerges from the simultaneous development of three dimensions. A Team Leader may know technical tools well but fail to deliver results without the ability to lead people; likewise, good interpersonal skills cannot replace knowledge of processes and methods.
Kaizen principles and concepts, behaviours, values and company mission. This is the compass that guides Team Leader decisions.
Knowledge and ability to apply Lean methods and tools specific to the sector and company.
Communication, motivation, team building, negotiation, feedback and coaching.
Learn by doing, where it matters.
The programme combines learning, on-the-job application and individual mentoring. Every skill is practised in real work, measured and consolidated.
On-site: workshops, observation, operational coaching and results verification.
Online: theory, preparation, mentoring and follow-up with the manager.
Three dimensions. Twelve essential skills.
A customised pathway based on the role, sector and KPIs the company wants to improve.

Why every module matters
A Team Leader can lead only when people recognise their credibility and follow their direction. This is essential for communicating standards, priorities and company policies correctly.
They provide a common industrial culture and shared criteria for addressing situations, making decisions and finding consistent solutions across departments.
Every sector has different processes and challenges. Content is adapted to the company’s specific issues to produce measurable improvements.
Shift performance is the sum of hour-by-hour performance. The Team Leader must identify deviations and promptly rebalance organisation and resources.
Not all problems are the same. The Team Leader learns to identify the type, analyse causes and apply the correct approach.
Creates an orderly, professional and safe workplace with the direct involvement of the people who work there.
Makes processes repeatable in quantity and quality and establishes the starting point for continuous improvement of standards.
Helps the Team Leader achieve daily performance by enabling people to work in harmony, with clear roles and a shared purpose.
Develops active listening, effective language and the ability to respond to team members’ ideas and objections, reducing conflict.
Prepares Team Leaders to manage holidays, leave, performance and other requests without harming either company or employee interests.
Enables the development of team members and builds an internal pipeline of people ready to take on greater responsibility.
How Learning by Doing works
The plan starts with an analysis of the Team Leader’s skills and the KPIs the company needs to improve. The manager validates the pathway, then the mentor establishes a regular routine built around four activities:
- Theory sessions: individual or group sessions to understand the principles, methods and skills to be acquired.
- Practical application: the mentor and Team Leader decide where and how to apply learning through workshops on real problems. Participants work and learn at the same time.
- Mentoring and coaching: review of what worked, what did not and the actions needed to achieve the result.
- Alignment with the manager: three-way meetings between mentor, Team Leader and manager to review progress, priorities and next actions.
70% on-site and 30% online
70% of activities take place on-site to observe work, apply methods, verify physical improvements and validate skills. The remaining 30% takes place online and is dedicated to theory, preparation, mentoring, results analysis and follow-up. Sessions can be planned in one- to four-hour blocks to minimise operational impact.
This configuration limits travel costs, provides greater scheduling flexibility and keeps workshop files, photos and information within the company’s systems.
